On Maslow Got it Wrong

My esteem friend Henry Manampiring a.k.a. @newsplatter wrote a note on how he disagrees that sex is basic need on Maslow Hierarchy of Need. He insisted that sex should be on top of that hierarchy which is self actualization It was cleverly written yet so funny. Knowing Henry, he might just want to mess with our brains for his amusement. Stupid me who can not resist to give a thought on this subject.

Let me start with a basic notion about basic need. As obvious as it is, one can not take for granted the necessary elements to become basic need.
Nevertheless, survival is a key element in defining a basic need. While need is defined as a simple gap between ideal state and current state, basic need should refer to the situation where the ideal state is to keep alive.

In that sense, any act of an animal is understood as a basic need because we believe that animal only has one purpose which is survival. They eat, drink, sleep, fight, run etc just to keep them alive. Even some actions that we perceived as playing or performing stem from the need to be alive. Animals do not amuse themselves.

How about sex in animal kingdom? They do not just die because lack of sex don’t they? Even in certain species they die because of having it. Why we still classify that as a basic need? The answer is on the fact that reproduction is a way for any species to survive. Sex is not an individual way to survive but a community way to survive.

Yes, you should be proud whenever you have sex because you in a way attempt to preserve human race. Of course, I talk about sex to reproduce. Not the one that make you sick worry because you too slow to pull it out 🙂

My answer to Henry, as long as you
perform sex to reproduce that belong to basic need. But not, if it is for your amusement. The same argument is applied to food or other items.

In conclusion, it is not the deed who define whether it is basic or not. But more on the objective of the deed.
